Nominations for Wyoming ACS Officers

posted in: Local Section Administration | 0

The Wyoming Local Section of the American Chemical Society holds an annual election each November. We are calling for nominations for the following seven executive positions to begin January 1, 2022. Please consider nominating yourself or a colleague.

Submit your nominations to Kristin R. Di Bona (krdibona@wyonics.com) by Sunday, November 28, 2021. You do not need to hold current membership to be nominated.

1. Chair-Elect (2-year term):  The chair-elect serves as program chair and has the principal responsibility for planning and arranging the section’s meeting programs for the year during which he or she will be chair. In addition, the chair-elect often serves as the primary speaker planner for the section and has access to the ACS Online Speaker Directory (www.speakers.acs.org). In addition to program planning, the section chair-elect may have other duties, as assigned by the chair and executive committee. Also, the chair-elect is invited each year to attend the ACS Leadership Institute. The three-day conference provides training as well as ideas about programs and activities for new section officers.

2. Secretary (2-year term): The section secretary has a broad range of responsibilities, among the most essential being those of maintaining the membership list and other section records. The secretary can download the section’s membership roster from the ACS website, which includes a complete alphabetical list of members’ names and addresses as well as separate addenda pages detailing address changes, new members, and other section roster amendments to the previous edition.

3. Treasurer (2-year term): First and foremost, the treasurer receives and disburses the section’s operating funds and is responsible for accounting for all section moneys, including annual ACS allotments, local membership dues, and program revenues and expenses. The treasurer is expected to maintain accurate financial records for the section and prepare periodic and annual reports on the section’s fiscal condition. The treasurer is also responsible for filing Internal Revenue Service Forms.

4. Councilor (3-year term): As a Councilor, you have a vital role in ACS governance. You act on issues of importance to all chemical scientists. As the elected representative of your local section or division, it is your duty to represent your constituency. It is also your duty to report back to your constituency all important actions and votes taken by the Council.

Special Duties of the Councilor: You are elected for a three-year term, unless you were elected to serve the unexpired term of a preceding Councilor. To participate in Council activities, you must first be certified as a Councilor. Your name and term of service must be submitted to the ACS CEO and certified on or before December 1 each year. In the late fall, the ACS National Office provides forms to your section or division secretary for this procedure. First-year Councilors are seldom appointed to an ACS committee. As a result, a new Councilor should use the first year to become familiar with ACS governance. Later, you should seriously consider becoming involved in an ACS committee because committees are driving forces of the ACS. They significantly influence the goals and actions of the Society; they are where most initiatives for Council consideration originate and are developed. To maximize your service to the ACS and your contribution to its governance, strive to serve more than one term as a Councilor. The key to being an effective Councilor is to stay informed. You should understand what is going on at the national level and within the local section or division that you represent. Remember, too, that you are a national Councilor. Looking out for your constituency is important; however, concern for the broader concerns of our profession and the chemical sciences at the national level is equally important. An understanding of the strategic direction of the Society will be vital in this regard. You should review the goals outlined in the ACS Strategic Plan.

5. Alternate Councilor (2-year term): As described for Councilor, above.

6. Members-at-Large (2-year term, two positions open): The duties of the Members-at-Large shall include bringing before the Executive Committee such items of concern to members of the Section that have been brought to their attention, as well as any duties assigned by the Executive Committee.
